In recent years, countries worldwide have intensified efforts to rebuild expertise in assets required for critical telecommunications infrastructure. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are capable of boosting optical signals in fiber-optic communication systems and offer unparalleled speed and bandwidth. They are typically manufactured from group III-V compound semiconductors such as InP/InGaAs. Recognising the pivotal role of telecom infrastructure in facilitating economic growth, partners within CSconnected, the compound semiconductor cluster in South Wales, are investing in novel SOA research and development via the Realising Enabling Architectures and Solutions for Open Networks (REASON) project, to unlock opportunities for UK innovation and economic advancement.
