3D-printed micro-optics at chip edges for assembly-free vertical coupling

Nanoscribe introduces a direct-write approach for vertical optical coupling by 3D printing free-space micro-optics directly onto photonic chip edges. This enables precise in- and out-coupling of light without additional assembly or active alignment, addressing a key bottleneck in scaling photonic integration.

Micro-optics are 3D printed directly on chips with alignment accuracy ≤100 nm. Using Two-Photon Grayscale Lithography 2GL®, optical-grade surfaces with low scattering losses are achieved, enabling highly efficient optical transmission.

The process is compatible with wafer- and die-level fabrication, opening new pathways for scalable optical interconnects and advanced photonic packaging.
