What's on at ECOC Exhibition 2018

The 2018 event is set to be bigger and better than ever, with the popular feature areas Market Focus, FTTx Centre and CTTS Training making a return. Read on to find out more about this year's line up.

Market Focus

Market Focus is one of the most popular areas of the exhibition and this year the 29-strong Market Focus agenda will feature the likes of Facebook, Microsoft, BT, Ovum, NTT, Cisco, Source Photonics and Telefonica, among others.

Sponsored by Inphi, the timetable for the three-day series of presentations is now live and available to view here featuring topics ranging from FTTX evolution and next-generation data centres to optics as an enabler for 5G.

‘Data Centres: Optics in Cloud Computing’ will kick-off this year’s Day 1 agenda with Inphi the first of six speakers which also include Facebook, II-VI Inv, Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO), Arista Networks and Luxtera.

Day 2 will see the spotlight cast on ‘Photonics Integration and Digital Silicon Photonics’, with speakers from Intel, Lightwave Logic, ePIXfab, Fraunhofer KKI, Ciena, and Light Counting Market taking to the stage in the morning.

The final day will be dedicated to the subject of ‘Service and Content Provider Optimal Transmission,’ with Ovum, BT, Finisar, Adva, Cisco, Huawei, NTT, China Mobile and CESNET all confirmed as participating.

"Market focus sessions were very informative and on the edge .... the best attended part of the show in my eyes and one that got a lot
of discussion afterwards"

FTTX Centre

Expanding on the CTTS popular feature held at ECOC over the past ten years the FTTx Centre will this year again incorporate live interactive demonstrations including fibre optic network delivery methods and OSP and ISP for FTTx vendor independent products.

The centre will also include an 'FTTx village' with eleven zones looking at different areas of fibre deployments:

Components Zone
Connectivity Zone
Connectorization Zone
FTTH Zone
FTTx Literature Library
FTTx New Product Zone
Fusion Splicing Zone
Home Zone
Inside Plant Zone
Outside Plant Zone
Test and Measurement Zone

Technical experts from CTTS (Cable Telecommunications Training Services) will be on hand to provide tours of the centre, answer questions and run demonstrations of the products featured. They will also conduct cutting-edge, live engineering demonstrations.

CTTS Training Zone

Once again, within the Exhibition Hall, CTTS will be running free training sessions covering insight into key techniques including:

  • Modern fusion splicing techniques using hand held fusion splicers - learn the fundamentals and make comparisons of the operation of these new machines.

  • Passive Optical Network testing using PON optimised OTDRs - discover how to test these demanding networks, how to configure the test equipment, understand the various stages of testing and test points.

  • Passive Optical Network Testing using Bidirectional Smart Testers - find out how to use Bidirectional Smart Testers for PON testing.

  • Fibre Optic Testing workshop covering acceptance to commissioning testing - learn the basics of fibre optic cable acceptance, post installation testing and the commissioning of optical fibres at operational wavelengths.

Telecom Infra Project: Open Optical and Packet Transport (TIP-OOPT)

Tuesday 25th September
Location: Meeting Room SC2
Time: 09:30 -“ 17:00

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is hosting a full day workshop about the Open Optical & Packet Transport group. Will be presenting the latest technologies and initiatives that are being worked and developed. You will hear about dis-aggregated transponders, optical simulation environments, open APIs and more.

We have organized a list of relevant speakers that will share their knowledge and experience outside the TIP community. The official workshop language is English; no attendance fee is required but we encourage you to join our initiative: https://oopt.telecominfraproject.com/

Conference demo

Tuesday 25th September
Location: Hall 9
Time: 13:30 – 17:00

The session will provide the opportunity to see live demonstrations and proto-types of collaborative research projects corresponding to all relevant topics of the Conference. The live session will provide a forum for researchers from Industry and Academia to give a demonstration of their work with concrete systems, tools and prototypes. The Demo zone will be open to both conference delegates and exhibition attendees, providing unique opportunities for potential technological transfer and dissemination of project results.

Fraunhofer HHI:  International Symposium on Hybrid PICs – at ECOC 2018 in Rome - Room SC2

Fraunhofer HHI together with Berlin Partner (Cluster Photonics) is hosting the International Symposium on Hybrid PICs at ECOC this year.

This symposium will take place on September 26, at the ECOC venue in Rome (Fiera Roma, Room SC2) and will cover the complete process chain from materials via simulations and fabrication to the final assembly and showcases hybrid PICs in different fields of applications.

We have assembled a list of most prominent speaker for this one-day event. The official conference language is English. No attendance fee is charged but we are kindly asking the participants to register http://www.polyphotonics-berlin.de/registration-symposium-on-hybrid-pics-at-ecoc/.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI is a world leader in the development for mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as processing and coding of video signals. Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from fundamental research to the development of prototypes and solutions.
