Optical modules offer 40 Gigabit Ethernet extended reach

Avago Technologies and Reflex Photonics have announced extended-reach 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) QSFP+ transceivers. The modules will enable data centre managers to link equipment over distances greater than 100m, as defined by the IEEE P802.3ba 40GbE standard.

Cisco shows off coherent 100G over 3000km

Cisco Systems reports that it has successfully tested its single-carrier coherent 100G DWDM technology over a distance of 3,000 km without using Raman amplification or dispersion compensation. This distance is 50% further than any non-Raman alternative product on the market today, the company claims.

Infonetics: Optical network equipment market up 8% in 4Q11

Worldwide spending on optical equipment, including WDM and SONET/SDH, increased 8% in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the previous quarter, reaching $3.6 billion, according to the latest Optical Network Hardware report by market research firm Infonetics Research.
