Huawei details flexible grid WDM prototype

Huawei has unveiled a DWDM prototype – a flexible-spectrum reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) and associated control plane – that supports 12.5GHz channels. The development will enable more efficient use of fibre capacity by squeezing future multi-carrier 400Gbps and 1Tbps transmissions into a smaller spectrum band based on 12.5GHz increments rather than the mainstream 50GHz grid spacing.

OIF launches 56G projects for highly integrated optical modules

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) has started three new projects to define electrical interfaces for the next generation of compact 100G and 400G optical modules. The projects were proposed at the OIF's second quarter meeting that took place last month in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

EU project uses OpenFlow to control the optical layer

ADVA Optical Networking has run an experiment to show the OpenFlow protocol controlling the optical and packet layers of the network. Until now the protocol, which provides a software-programmable interface, has been used to manage packet switches; the adding of the optical layer control is an industry first, the company claims.

Facebook choses TeliaSonera for pan-European network

Facebook is expanding in Europe.  TeliaSoneria International Carrier, a subsidiary of the Swedish operator TeliaSonera, has been selected to build and operate a pan-European managed optical network for the social networking giant.

Russian investment firm backs NeoPhotonics

A Russian sovereign technology fund has acquired $40 million (€31.4 million) worth of newly-issued common shares in the photonic integrated subsystem developer NeoPhotonics.  The purchase price represented a 78% premium over the company's share price at the time the deal was announced.

“Eleven years ago, former Agilent Technologies engineer Julio Perdomo left Sonoma County's largest high-tech manufacturer to launch his own startup. On Friday, he sold a chunk of it back to his former employer,” writes the Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, California, where the start-up is based.

ZTE leads in global PON OLT deployments

ZTE shipped 1.8 million passive optical network (PON) optical line terminals (OLTs) in 2011 to become the leading supplier with 41 percent of the global market, according to Ovum. The market research firm also ranks ZTE as the second largest supplier of PON optical network terminals (ONT) in 2011, with 28 percent global market share.

Will there be a glut of submarine cable capacity?

There has been a boom in submarine cable construction globally, according to the latest data from TeleGeography’s Global Bandwidth Research Service. In 2010 and 2011, 19 systems costing an aggregate $3.7 billion (€2.8 billion) were launched, and the pace of growth is increasing. Throughout 2012 and 2013, 33 new submarine cable systems are expected to be deployed at a projected total cost of $5.5 billion.
