Cortina Systems unveils multi-channel electronic dispersion compensation chip

Cortina Systems has announced an electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) chip that supports eight duplex 10Gbps links. The CS4342 is suited for use with optical modules and on line cards to counter the effect of transmission distortion where a bit's energy leaks into one or more adjacent bits.

Google Fiber opens its order book

Google Fiber – the search giant’s hotly anticipated FTTH project in Kansas City – is now taking orders for service on its network.  The network isn’t fully built yet, but that’s kind of the point.  Google will use the registration information to work out where demand is greatest, and connect up homes in those neighbourhoods first.

Ovum: data centre demands will drive optical sales

Ovum is upbeat about the long-term forecast for sales of optical networking equipment. The analyst firm is predicting that sales will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5% to reach $20 billion (€16.2 billion) by 2017.

Huawei unveils 2Tbps superchannel prototype

Huawei has developed a prototype optical system that carries 2Tbps DWDM superchannels – an increase in data rate of 20 times compared to commercially available systems, and double what’s been demonstrated anywhere else before. The remarkable superchannel capacity reduces operational complexity by minimizing the number of channels.

Huawei delivers GigaDSL prototype to Swisscom

Incumbent operator Swisscom is planning to provide homes and businesses outside major urban centers with ultra-high-speed internet connections using equipment from Huawei. The GigaDSL prototype, which the vendor unveiled last year, is able to provide gigabit speeds over short distances of copper cable.

European regulatory decision pleases incumbents

The debate over whether operators should be forced to lower the prices they charge other operators for access to their copper telephone networks appears to have been settled. Incumbents had argued that reducing copper prices would simply limit the amount of cash available for investment in new networks, and it appears that the European Commission agrees.

Finisar to acquire Red-C Optical Networks

Finisar has announced it plans to acquire Red-C Optical Networks in a deal that could be worth up to US $43.7 million (€35.8 million). The acquisition will broaden Finisar's optical amplifier product range and strengthen the company's strategy to become more vertically integrated as it targets ROADM sub-systems.
