Alcatel-Lucent fine-tunes 100G transmission

Alcatel-Lucent has enhanced the optical performance of its 100G single-carrier coherent technology. The company's 100Gbps extended reach (100G XR) line card, used with its 1830 Photonic Service Switch, improves performance by 30% by fine-tuning the algorithm that runs on its coherent receiver ASIC. The system vendor says the typical optical reach now extends to 2,000km.

Oclaro adds 100G to its optical transponder offerings

Oclaro has detailed its 100Gbps coherent optical module, which will become available from the second quarter of 2012. The MI 8000XM is a 5x7-inch module and expands Oclaro's range of coherent offerings. The company is already shipping in volume a 40Gbps coherent module.

Telecom capital expenditure grows to $311bn in 2011

Global capital expenditure (capex) by service providers will grow 6% this year to $311 billion (€230 billion). So claims a report by Infonetics Research. The operators' revenues are also up, growing 7.6% in 2011 to reach $1.86 trillion. Operator revenue growth in 2010 was 4.1%.

CityFibre seeking

CityFibre Holdings has appointed investment bank Macquarie Capital to help it raise the money for a monster fibre rollout in the UK.  The firm wants to raise £500 million (€585 million) to build metro and access fibre networks connecting up to 50,000 businesses and 1 million homes.

Infonetics: optical transceiver market forecast to double in 2011

The global market for 10G, 40G, and 100G optical transceivers is forecast to grow to $2.6 billion by 2015, more than doubling from 2010, when the market was worth $1.2 billion, according to the latest market report from Infonetics Research.

Southern Cross picks Ciena for 40G subsea upgrade

Ciena has secured a major contract to upgrade capacity on the Southern Cross submarine cable in the South Pacific.  The cable links California in the US with Australia and New Zealand stopping off at Hawaii and Fiji along the way.
